Does My Bum Look Big in This Ad?

Does My Bum Look Big in This Ad? – Lisa Cox

This little handbook is designed for young ladies (or gentlemen).  It is a guide to understanding advertising and pop culture, and your place in it as a consumer.  But more importantly it helps these young people realise that the models in advertising are not ‘real’ people.  Even the most stunning models are airbrushed and digitally enhanced till they are flawless and unrealistic.

Does my bum look big in this ad? is set out in a handbook fashion with sections for readers to write their responses, and encourages research and thought.

Lisa Cox hasn’t just researched this subjuct, she has been in the media industry for nearly a decade and knows what goes on from both sides of the camera.

For teachers, I would encourage you to use this book in the classroom.  Tweens especially would benefit greatly from the discussions and research.

For parents, I would suggest using this book as a tool to educate your kids.  I can’t say if they would pick it up and read it on their own (they are an unpredictable bunch), but it would definately be good for them on a personal level if they were encouraged to.  It’s the kind of book that can be done in sections and explored together while flicking through a teen magazine or watching the advertising on tv.  For self confident kids, it is well worth a try.
