The 4 Powers of Daren Saner

The 4 Powers of Daren Saner
Michael Oehley

Never before has a story based in a futuristic space age left me wanting more.

The 4 Powers of Daren Saner shifts between two very different realities with thousands of years between them; The Starship Superia and the ancient city of Periapoli.  Both worlds are vastly different, but when Daren Saner accidently discovers the ability to travel from his current life on Superia to his past life in Periapoli he realises the two are strangely linked and the two realities are mirrored.

In the ancient city of Periapoli the people are endowed with various powers, air, earth, fire or water.  It is common for people to have a combination of two as genetically predetermined.  However Daren discovers he is blessed with all four powers and therefore he is the cause of fear, up roar and violent riots, for he must be the ordained forbidden child.  Can he use his powers to end the riots or is Periapoli destined to be destroyed forever?

At the same time Daren discovers the means to his past life the Starship Superiors master computer starts to malfunction.  The situation gets worse as time goes on and with the co-ordinates to their home planet lost and no inhabitable planet imminent, will Daren be able to bring his former powers back? And even if he can will he be able to save the ship before it’s too late?

The 4 Powers of Daren Saner is an absorbing read, the shifting between worlds keeps you on your toes, I would find myself disappointed when the story would leave one world and go to the next as I wanted to know more, but quickly I would be back enjoying the present world only to find myself again not wanting to leave it when the chapter ends and directs you back.  Both worlds are completely different, two different stories that merge together perfectly to create this book.

Michael Oehley has managed to bring together seamlessly 1 story of fantasy and the mystical with subhuman powers and cryptic clues, with another of the scientific, futuristic and regimented structure found on a well oiled spaceship.
Congratulations Michael on a great book for tweens and teens (I enjoyed it, so why stop there?)

The 4 Powers of Daren Saner is a Bug in a Book Seasonal Recommendation.
