This is a book full of little projects and tips for girls on how to be fabulous. Somethings may seem a bit silly like: how to avoid the paparazzi and how to walk your dog with style; but others are more useful such as how to give your skin a fabulous natural glow. There are crafty projects involving recycling and beauty projects such as making your own skin care stuff. It needs to be said that some of the projects require things you may not have on hand, are time-consuming and may require an additional or adult pair of hands.

At first I was a little put off by the title and the fact that it appears to reinforce girly stereotypes about the importance of beauty and appearance (there is nothing about intellectual pursuits or sport in this). In truth it still does bother me but I can’t deny that for some girls this will be very appealing, so perhaps the best way to review it is to give you what my daughter (9) wrote about it:

What I like about this book is that you get to discover the secret of being fabulous. What I don’t like about this book is that sometimes I don’t have the right things or enough things for stuff (projects). Why I want to keep this book: so I can take care of myself.

That possibly says it better, and yes it does encourage some good things. As a mother I just now have to make sure I find other ways to encourage self-esteem and abilities that have nothing to do with appearance. A fun book.
