TV Star is the seventh novel in the Dork Diaries series, although it doesn’t matter if you haven’t read any others beforehand, as the story stands alone and explains any prior relationships clearly.

It is written in the form of diary entries from the point of view of a young teenage girl (Nikki). In this book Nikki and her band are to perform at a fundraising event, and in the lead up to this Nikki is being filmed for a television reality show.

Nikki experiences her first near kiss at the beginning of the novel, and typical teenage girl angst is portrayed brilliantly by the author in the “does he like me or not?” internal questioning.

The arch nemesis, Mackenzie, is also portrayed well and I found myself cheering on Nikki in her encounters with her as the novel progressed.

The side story of the class learning martial arts was nonsensical, but again, portrayed the mind of an awkward teenager well.

It is a fast paced, entertaining novel that accurately, although sometimes exaggeratedly, portrays the trials and stresses a teenager may face these days, and I would recommend it as a light read for a young girl.

I can easily see how this is a popular series, as I myself would be interested in now reading the previous novels.
