The creators of The Gruffalo (Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler) have produced another book called “The scarecrows’ wedding” which has for various reasons attracted a lot of publicity.
Written by Julia Donaldson (a British writer who was Children’s Laureate from 2011 – 2013) the book has received criticism from various sources because the villain in the story, Reginald Rake, smokes a cigar. Whatever. Further criticism suggested that there was too much kissing.
The book is a rhyming narrative which makes reading the story aloud fun and easy. The illustrations by Axel Scheffler are in his distinctive colourful, cartoon-like style. There is much more to this story than the cigar although it does cause havoc when it starts a fire. Obviously smoking is dangerous.
