Phil Cummings Shane Devries Scholastic ISBN 9781760277055 RRP $24.99 Age 3+ Date of publication May 2017 Reviewer Neville Sandon This is a great book. I should declare my passion for his new book “Boy”. As the firstborn child of deaf parents, I can not recall any children’s book addressing “deaf-ness”. “So few of them” (but is this accurate?) so why bother? Phil Cummings is a sensitive observer of people and he bothered to write about people who surround us but we […]

Neridah McMullin Ainsley Walters One Day Hill ISBN 9780992439736 RRP $24.99 Age 6+ Date of publication February 2015 Reviewer Neville Sandon The delight is that in the 1890s there was a tall Aboriginal boy, Johnny Mullagh. The disappointment is that there is no replay to watch him on the cricket pitch, with a bat, or on the field whether in Australia or in England. Not much is known about cricket in Australia in the 19th century which makes it all […]
Uncle Joe Kirk Sandi Harrold Scholastic Australia ISBN 9781743628577 RRP $15.99 Age 3+ Date of publication January 2015 Reviewer Neville Sandon Talking about indigenous Australian’s culture is long overdue. For those of us who learnt history as “facts” “dates”, “places” along with key “significant individuals”, left us with the society, culture and beliefs of Aboriginals as an enigma. There was little appreciation of how the original Australian’s culture and beliefs were communicated within families and community. Found in Aboriginal myths […]

Michael Gerard Bauer Illustrator; Joe Bauer Omnibus books for Scholastic $14.99 ISBN; 978186291992 Primary school age. Reviewed By Cassandra Griffin. The first thing that struck me about Eric Vale – Epic Fail is the great illustrations throughout; there is not one page that doesn’t have a detailed drawing on it! With names like Martin Fassbender it’s not hard to smile at this story and at Eric’s nickname ‘epic fail’. With disgusting antics like rolling belly button fluff into balls and flicking […]
